UNN lecturers continue protest against removal of VC

Staff at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), on
Monday, continued their protest against the removal
of the institution’s Vice Chancellor.

The protest, which started on December 18 last year
and was continued following the return of the
lecturers from their holidays, was to persuade the
Federal Government to remove the replacement,
Bartho Okolo – whom they accused of misusing
funds and being corruptn and restore Emeka Enejere
to the position of Pro-chancellor of the UNN.
The protest, under the Joint Action Committees
(JAC), was led by ASUU, Paul Obodoike, NASU,
SSANU, Anthony Onwu, Ifeanyichikwu Abada, and
Godfrey Ugwu.
The protest, which left activities in the school at a
standstill, resumed with a prayer at the University’s
Freedom Square, from where the workers moved to
the second gate, as they sang songs in protest.
Speaking to journalists, the JAC spokesman, Abada,
said, “Government should reinstate the suspended
pro-chancellor or make public the offence he
committed.
“UNN workers want government to remove Okolo
and set up a panel of inquiry to probe him on his
financial recklessness and refusal to adhere to due
process in awarding contracts.”
Stating that the workers were uncomfortable with
the current administration under Okolo, Abada said,
“We will continue to carry this protest until justice is
done through government’s intervention.”
